I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank you and your fellow members of the Expert Panel for undertaking this important study examining the broad range of older workers issues and measures to support older workers. The work of your panel will provide a better understanding of the labour market challenges and set out policy recommendations.

Older workers make a valuable contribution to the Canadian society and economy. They are well educated and highly skilled by international standards. In the context of an aging population and as baby boomers retire, the experience, skills and talents of older workers will become even more important in ensuring the strength and competitiveness of the Canadian economy. We also need to pay attention to the needs of displaced older workers.

I am pleased that you will be consulting with provincial and territorial governments, stakeholders and employers; holding academic round tables; and encouraging all Canadians to provide their views on this important matter. Your Web site will serve to support this dialogue.
